“We are committed to the growth and adoption of innovative new technologies in the glass industry, and are excited to support Miru with our know-how on glass processing processes in their journey to develop electrochromic windows. We see potential in Miru’s novel solution in reaching a more cost-effective, high tolerance and high yield manufacturing of switchable tinted glass than previous approaches,” said Sasu Koivumäki, Glaston’s Chief Sales Officer.

“Glaston has long been at the forefront of glass innovation, and we are excited to be working with them to scale Miru’s next-generation energy-efficient windows,” said Curtis Berlinguette, Chief Executive Officer at Miru. “Miru eWindows offer versatile form factors for a wide range of market segments. With Glaston’s support and expertise in upscaling and technology industrialization, we are looking to advance our go-to-market strategies – delivering on expedited timelines and leveraging Glaston’s process know-how across engineering and manufacturing.”

Miru eWindow technology uses electricity to control the tint level of the glass, automatically adjusting to bring in natural light while controlling heat gain and glare. The eWindows aim to lower air-conditioning loads to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while increasing the energy efficiency of buildings by as much as 20%, and the driving range of electric vehicles by up to 10%.

Glaston and Miru are currently working to further develop their respective technologies to enable the expansion of the production capabilities of Miru eWindows. Development and testing of Miru’s solution is done in Glaston’s R&D facility in Tampere, Finland. This will involve combining Miru’s process and materials with Glaston’s glass pre-processing, bending, heat treatment and laminating equipment technologies and know-how.

Miru Smart Technologies and Mativ Collaborate to Develop Innovative Electrochromic Window Technology

VANCOUVER, BC, October 9, 2024 Mativ, global manufacturer of Argotec brand engineered polymer films, and Miru, a leading smart window technology developer, have announced a joint development agreement to commercialize a novel lamination interlayer for dynamic electrochromic windows (“eWindows”). This partnership will bring together technologies to simplify the manufacturing process and lower the cost of producing eWindows for glass fabricators and automakers worldwide.

“Partnering with Mativ, a company that shares our commitment to innovation, quality and sustainability, is a big step forward for the glass industry. Together, we will leverage our expertise and resources to develop an advanced eWindow technology that will offer breakthroughs in energy efficiency and comfort for the transportation and building sectors,” said Dr. Curtis Berlinguette, Chief Executive Officer of Miru.

“Powered by advanced Argotec TPU interlayer extrusions — an innovation born from Mativ’s materials expertise — this collaboration will accelerate the global adoption of dynamic eWindow technology. By utilizing Mativ’s Argotec solution, manufacturers worldwide can reduce energy consumption and lower their carbon footprint, driving meaningful environmental impact,” said Mativ President and Chief Executive Officer, Julie Schertell.

Smart window technology with on-demand tinting controls is revolutionizing the automotive industry by enhancing vehicle climate management and driver comfort. Miru’s eWindow technology is the only offering that meets growing consumer and regulatory demands for curved, neutral-color, low-haze, and energy-efficient glass. By dynamically adjusting tint levels, eWindows improve solar energy performance, reducing the need for air conditioning and heating within vehicles, and extending electric vehicle range substantially.

In the residential and commercial sectors, eWindows significantly increase overall building energy efficiency. Compared to conventional windows with low-emissivity coatings, eWindows can reduce energy usage by 20-40%, depending on geography and climate. The lamination interlayer is a versatile and durable thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film. Argotec is the world leader in extrusion of optical interlayer and edge seal films for a variety of glass lamination and glazing applications, with excellent durability, flexibility, chemical resistance, and clarity.

Mativ will be exhibiting a Miru sample eWindow at the International Glasstec trade show in Germany this October – visit Argotec in Hall 10, booth F74.

Miru surpasses critical milestone in durability testing

Next Generation eWindows Prove Resilient to Thermal and Solar Stresses

VANCOUVER, BC, August 31, 2023 – Miru Smart Technologies, a developer of next generation electrochromic windows (eWindows) achieved a critical testing milestone that proves the technology’s resilience to thermal and solar stresses.

Miru eWindow samples have surpassed 150,000 cycles under ambient conditions and 50,000 cycles under aggressive sun and heat testing conditions. Miru’s eWindow samples showed no degradation throughout the rigorous testing cycle. Miru’s patented electrode formulation and manufacturing process showed resilience to thermal and solar stresses—validating Miru’s system design and setting the stage for Miru to move to the commercialization phase of its manufacturing process.

The 50,000 cycle test is an accelerated version of ASTM E2141 testing conditions, with 1 Sun irradiance at 85°C and an extreme accelerated cycle time of one minute. The ASTM E2141 test is the industry standard for materials, products, systems, and services for electrochromic windows. To reach 50,000 cycles is considered to meet 50 years of operation for electrochromic windows in buildings.

“Through this intense testing, Miru has validated our eWindow technology and confirmed our key materials, system and manufacturing design considerations” said Curtis Berlinguette, Founder and CEO, Miru Smart Technologies. “This significant achievement demonstrates the reliability and durability of Miru’s technology, and underscores our commitment to delivering innovative and high-performance window solutions.”

Expand your view: Electrochromic windows and dynamic glass trends in 2023

Electrochromic windows are expanding our view. This past year has seen electrochromic windows (“eWindows”) gain traction as energy codes, increased regulations and incentives drive more builders to adopt these energy efficient windows. And as electric vehicles (“EVs”) become more prevalent to help address climate change, so too is using dynamic glass for EVs and other automobiles.

We’ve compiled some of the more noteworthy eWindows and dynamic glass updates, trends and news articles that we’ve seen in 2023.

In the media

Forbes, CBS News and more covered eWindows and highlighted the important role the technology plays in reducing building energy use and carbon emissions. Smart glass and energy-efficient windows also trended at the largest trade shows in glass and consumer electronics throughout the year.

New buildings

Architects and developers are increasingly driven to minimize the energy and carbon impact of their buildings. In 2023, airports, universities, offices, commercial spaces, and hotels globally incorporated eWindows into their architectural innovations and created dynamic façades that are environmentally conscious. These buildings married functionality and aesthetics by using eWindows like Miru’s to optimize daylight and improve building energy efficiency by 20%.
